Instructional Timeline

An instructional calendar is a map that provides a logical path: aligning state performance standards, curriculum and assessment based on the needs of student groups, and the weight of the objectives on the performance test. Calendars should be developed before the school year begins. Working collaboratively as a grade level or subject area team creates a spirit of teamwork and a sense of ownership. The instructional calendar should remain flexible so teachers can regularly meet to review and revise the timeline based on data gained form periodic assessments.

Benefits of an instructional calendar:

  • Is data directed
  • Provides a clear and direct plan
  • Pertains to any subject area, grade level, campus, etc.
  • Eliminates excessive review periods
  • Provides a logical seque nce and relationship of skills
  • Provides a clear perspective – daily, weekly, and yearly
  • Is flexible and based on student needs
  • Provides instructional focus
  • Encourages ownership
  • Involves staff in curriculum decision -making
